Board Sizing

Selecting the right wakesurf board size can be confusing, but we're here to help! An average Surf style board can range from 3’6” (perfect for kids) to over 5’. Longboards typically kick off around 5’6” and can extend beyond 8’. Skim style boards are measured in inches, typically starting around 42” and up.

The ideal size for your board depends on many factors, including your height, weight, skill level, boat type, and even water depth. Most manufacturers provide a size chart as a helpful starting point, primarily based on your height and weight. However, it's crucial to consider your own abilities, your boat's wave, and even the depth of the water.

If your boat generates an average to great wave, the manufacturer's recommendations should be a perfect fit for you. However, if you're working with an older boat that produces a smaller wave or if you typically surf in shallow waters, you might consider going up a size. The extra size will compensate for the reduced push.

For those with above-average skills and looking to push their limits, as well as a fantastic wave, you can stick with the recommended size. Alternatively, if the recommended board size sits on the border of your ideal fit and you are just a little over the recommended sizing, you can possibly size down depending on your personal preferences. Keep in mind, though, that this should be approached with caution if you have a wide stance or an aggressive riding style.

If you're in the market for a board that can accommodate your entire family or group of friends (though we don't typically recommend this, given significant variations in sizing), you'll want a board on the taller end of the spectrum. Larger boards offer enhanced stability but may sacrifice a bit of maneuverability for smaller riders. In these cases, we recommend considering a skim board (provided it matches the rider's skill level) or a hybrid. Surf-style boards can prove more challenging for smaller riders to maneuver if they're oversized and inexperienced.

As you can see, board size is typically very tailored depending on many factors. Many people wonder why they can't let go of the rope or keep falling out of the wave, and while numerous factors come into play, your board's size plays a significant role. To get the most enjoyment while you are on the water, it's important to have the correct size for your specific needs.

Still uncertain about the ideal board size for you? No worries!
